Today, we dipped our toes in Tunisia! Students had different Tunisian centres, where they learned facts (Did you know that Tunisia has a drought every 3-4 years? Or that children go to school six days a week?), resources, what importing and exporting are, what Tunisia exports, and played a game called Mankala. Cheryl, our guide, finished off by reading a book called Galimoto, written by Karen Lynn Williams, a story about a boy named Kondi who designs and makes a toy vehicle out of scrap metal. I’m thinking this might be a good springboard into designing with different materials! We finished our layouts for our Peru Centres, had Music, and finished up some Visual Journal pages by adding in more details and colour. Cheerios! This morning, Mrs. K was in for me this morning, as I had some matters to attend to. When I returned, the classroom was in one piece, no one was duct taped to the wall, and all eyebrows were in tact. Success! In the afternoon, we sang some songs in the gym, and then we tackled and conquered our watercolor paintings. They are beautiful works of art. That’s all I am going to say. We have our Tunisia presentation tomorrow. Ms England and Ms Parent’s classes had their round today, and word by the bike racks it was great fun, engaging, and informative. Report cards are coming home tomorrow! Fun Lunch tomorrow! It also looks like we are heading towards my wish for 1 meter of snow this winter. Fingers are crossed. Cheerios! I did a switch with Ms Parent today for the first part of the morning. I went to her class to teach them a watercolor lesson, and Ms Parent began The Seven Teachings, based on the Cree Teachings. Today, students focused on the buffalo and respect, what it looks like, and what students can do to be respectful towards themselves, others, and their environment that the move and exist in. After recess, we continued on with The One and Only Ivan, which was followed by math. We reviewed our task from last week, comparing 26 and 206, and considering why the “0” is important. Today, we did a side trip looking at expanded numbers, how they relate to place value, and then we created a little accordion visual to help them understand it better. They were very excited to learn this trick, and they are even more excited to show and teach you tonight. After lunch, we began our class’s watercolor project, which we will finish up tomorrow. Gym got the blood pumping, and then we finished off the day with finishing up the Respect page in the buffalo illustration, reflection question, and the web brainstorm. Cheerios! - Isaac Asimov IMPORTANT INFORMATION We still need one more volunteer for the Tunisia presentation on Wednesday morning. IMPORTANT DATES December 19: Last Day to Donate for the We Club December 20: Teacher’s Pet In-Class Presentation & Stations (morning) December 20: Fun Lunch (Boston Pizza) December 20: Report Cards sent home December 21: Winter Party (1:30 - 2:30) December 21: Last School day before Winter Break December 22: PD Day - No school for students OUR DAY 69 days under our belt, 111 days to go! Today, we continued our exploration of numbers, comparing 26 and 206, with specifically looking at what is the ‘0’. Some ideas that came up during our discussion were the zero is a place-holder, and that the zero counts as a number. We played 4-Corners Treasure Island with Ms England’s class, a tag/strategy game. Ask your child how it is played. After Music, I read The One and Only Ivan to the class. Our discussions have gone towards different zoos, natural habitats, mall-zoos, cages, ad sanctuaries, and the impact it has on animals, and humans. Students also wrote a prediction of what they think will happen to Ivan and Ruby in the story. I clarified with the students that they need to pull out information (evidence) from the book to support their opinion, and that predictions are not feelings or personal wishes. Students got individual shots of themselves in the photo booths from last night’s Family Winter Event. They were definitely a big hit. The pictures will go into their journals, along with a response of the process leading up it. We finished off our day with Scattergories (one of my favourites), a game where students have to come up with a given item beginning with a given letter. This is a good way for students to think up more descriptive words. Have a fabulous weekend! Cheerios! Ms Lauf IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Today, Ms England switched places with Ms Lauf! (But just for the morning.) Ms England taught the students about Arpilleras (ask your child), and then they created pieces for their own arpilleras. (Ms Lauf was in Ms England’s class teaching them a watercolor painting lesson, which is coming to our class shortly.) After recess, students listened to The One and Only Ivan, and then they continued with their Peru Centres page layouts. After lunch, we reflected on the S4 visit with Constable Jan, which then led to reflection writing in the visual journals. Gym was a big hockey fiesta. We also hung out in the library. Our props are done, and the photo booths are set up! See you tonight! Cheerios! "There's really just one thing I can control: my attitude during the journey, which is what keeps me feeling steady and stable, and what keeps me headed in the right direction. So I consciously monitor and correct, if necessary, because losing attitude would be far worse than not achieving my goal."

Boo has disappeared in the school somewhere, and Angis (Ms Lauf’s elf) was hanging off the heart garland. Oi vey. We finished up everything for the Family Winter Event. We also tackled the different layouts for the Peru Centres that will be documented in the visual journals. There reasons are twofold:
We had a shorter library today as we were knee-deep into math. I have booked extra time for tomorrow. Cheerios! Ms Lauf “It’s not enough to shelve your own competitive streak. While this post is short, trust me, it was a full day of learning and laughter. We got another good chunk of The One and Only Ivan in under our belts. We are looking at clues the author might have told us already on how Ivan’s life might turn out. Today was a day to work together getting our class ready for Thursday night. It will be a surprise what we have created, so make sure you come by Thursday evening to see it! Hints I will leave you: painting on big sheets, learning dry-brushing techniques, how to keep paper from wrinkling when you paint on it, and adding texture with tissue paper. Our day was interjected with recess, music, and gym outside. Cheerios! Ms Lauf |
